Safety in schools is always about communications and planning. A School Paging system is critical, but a boring system that is always present. Along with that are the clocks, and in most cases a “want or need” for true mass or visual notification, though there isn’t always the budget.
A 3 minute history of a tool set that changed broadcast production as we know it, and how tools like Grass Valley Director are changing broadcast production today.
Schools have many audio needs which become apparent during this Back to School season which highlights new needs and problems. Suddenly there is a surge of last minutes needs coming in.
This is a case study on how Zoom and Aver have helped Haileybury school provide a better learning experience and a more natural involvement. Haileybury was looking for a solution on how to get multiple real-time conversations were happening in a natural environment for students that encourage collaboration and didn't require too much teacher technology at startup. They turned to Aver and Zoom to make this possible.
My amplifiers being delayed and not getting out caused a nightmare scenario. It took hours of back tracking hustle, a day of lost work, and many excuses and promises to clients to get it resolved. You know what I’m talking about, you have probably been there too.
Just like the folks at CNN, you can manipulate the display to work with charts, graphs, presentations, maps, videos and websites, in a collaborative and interactive way. You can even have multiple people working on multiple computers interactively right from the video wall, interactively and simultaneously. And, there’s no limit to the number of sources, or the number of displays.
This means you can have guests present without sacrificing security and without adding hassle. You now have more flexibility to use ClickShare in more secure corporate environments and share and present without worry. IT security demands were heard and addressed, in a way that means as a user, you never have to “think about” how to make it work, it just continues to do so.
Take advantage of generous instant rebates on our remaining 6A and 6C inventory. It’s a rare opportunity to score a screaming deal on MIPRO gear that will serve you well for up to 3 years
You know the situation. If you are putting in a USB appliance such as a camera in a room, and you find out that the cable run from the camera to its destination is just a hair longer than the spec, what do you do?
In our previous installment, we learned how flexible, expandable and easy it is to design and deploy any kind of video wall or grouping of video walls with our new-found friend the video wall controller. We learned that is not necessary to incorporate any additional hardware device such as switchers, routers, extenders and even control systems in most video wall applications.
Do you remember those commercials with Payton Manning “If it’s shot with a Sony it should be watched on a Sony?”
That’s right. Use the form below to let us know what your experience with Starin, and the Electro Voice products you purchased was like and you’ll be automatically entered to win. Don’t worry, we won’t share any of your information, we promise.
Back in the 1990s, computer technology switched from connecting peripherals via serial and parallel ports to USB. At the time, the attraction wasn’t about data transfer speeds, but rather the simplicity of port configuration. For those of us who remember, the need to manually set baud rates and figure out the handshaking protocols between devices like printers and modems was an effort in futility.
Then, along came USB. Whoopee! Plug-and-Play was finally here! We finally had a way to just plug a device into the computer and it would mysteriously just work. Well, almost. There were a few hiccups along the way with drivers and such, but fast-forward to today, and it’s just an afterthought. But wait! There’s still one issue that confronts us when we apply the simplicity of USB to the Pro AV world. There’s seldom a case where the included USB cable is long enough.
The “Original” USB, better known as USB 1.1 had a paltry 12Mbps data speed which was fine for a keyboard and mouse but is impossibly slow for just about any other application. It has a length limitation of 3 meters or about 10 feet. That’s the cable that it comes with, right? So, for applications like external drives or cameras, people turned to Firewire to overcome the limited data speed.
With premium industrial design and an Ultra-HD imaging system, Rally Camera tops the lineup of standalone video cameras from Logitech®. Packed with advanced optics and breakthrough technologies, Rally Camera delivers premium performance in professional meeting spaces of all shapes and sizes.
Why? This is the bigger brother to the EVIDC4.2 ceiling speakers. What is the big difference? Two times the size woofer. In the real world, this is an excellent sounding speaker that has a focused quality all the way down to 62 Hertz. While the overall footprint in the ceiling is the same, this is a perfect solution for any room that needs a mix of full range sound along with high-quality speech. The slightly tighter dispersion gives great impact, so understand that you will need more speakers to cover the same area than with the 4-inch version. I have relied on this speaker for years with thousands of happy customers. Nine to twelve-foot ceilings are a perfect match for this unit.
If you’ve ever deployed video walls before, you know that the difference between a great video wall and a lousy video wall is all in the control processor.
I get a fair amount of calls about transporting video signals from one place to another. Sometimes its video from a camcorder to a video control area in a church. Sometimes its video from a PTZ camera to a switcher or computer. And sometimes its sending video from a stadium or gym back to the control room in a college or high school. Either way, there are several considerations that you’ll need to address before you can recommend a solution. To fully understand what we’re up against, we need to agree on the most basic limitations of each digital video transport medium. (aka video cables)
After going through the requirements list and checking out various camera options I settled in on not a Sony, or Panasonic, but the JVC KY-PZ100s and JVC’s RM-LP100 remote Camera controller. I gave the pastors and director of communications a demo of the system and they were sold.
Paging, Clocks, Bells and now Mass Notification are all standard pieces of equipment for any School. With that said, the last few decades have seen little innovation in this sector it would seem. With legacy product still dominating these categories, most schools tend to be frustrated with the type of existing systems. So why is it that there isn’t something better?
This time each year I get asked the same questions repeatedly, "How do you get audio in an outdoor event, that spans a large area such as a downtown main street during street fairs or other municipal activities?" Most don’t know where to start, and rightly so. Getting audio, without miles of wires or buy-in from a local business is COMPLICATED. Or more correctly it was. Music, announcements, performers oh my! Read on to see the best way to get this done, in a package that can be used over and over and give any municipality a great return!
We all know how important it is to have confidence in a product manufacturer when it comes to technology products. Of course, we look at product quality and consistency first. We want to feel we can expect that it works as advertised. We always think of customer service as well. Is there a phone number to call if I have problems? How long will I be down if a component goes bad?
The Meeting Owl also works well in small conference rooms where 4-8 people are sitting within a 12-foot diameter of the Owl.
I have never been a huge fan of the portable column systems. Let me throw that out there. For the best in the market, the price points and my ears never lined up. I saw them as Niche, for those who needed the portability, and were willing sacrifice either substantial dollars or audio quality. When I first got the opportunity to hear this I thought “Great, why are you making a me too product?” I was wrong. Very, incredibly wrong.
Direct-View LED Video Walls are the rage of our industry right now. Its an exciting time for those of us looking for new growth opportunities. But, when we dig into Direct-View LED offerings, we rapidly discover there’s a lot of complexity that few of us have experience with. In many cases, that means we are smart enough to walk away from the opportunity, or we are trying and failing to deliver a successful deployment and corresponding poor customer experience.
Over the past decade, or maybe a bit longer, the term “partner” has been thrown around quite a bit. We should realize that a partner is more than just someone who does business with us, however. The role of a partner involves strategic alignment and a genuine desire to improve one another’s vision, goals, operations, or all of the above. If we take a close, hard look at it, we may begin to see how our customers are involved in shaping our organizational framework. We as “vendors” and “service providers” are constantly trying to make our customers’ lives better. With “customer-centricity” becoming buzz worthy, it’s the perfect time for us to begin looking at our customers as more than just “someone who buys our stuff.”
Pixel-pitch is the distance between the center of one RGB LED to the center of the next RGB LED in any direction. This is probably the single most important consideration when selecting products for a Direct-View LED video wall. This is because the distance between the LEDs determines the apparent resolution of the image.
Pendo was founded in 2013 when alumni from Rally, Google, Cisco, and Red Hat combined their heads and hearts to build something they wanted but never had as product managers — a simple way to understand and attack what truly drives product success.
The Tech Museum, an interactive science and technology center located in Silicon Valley, installed Logitech GROUP, MeetUp and PTZ Pro 2 to support video collaboration for external meetings and global sales/donation interactions. Meeting Owl is plug and play, you just set it on your meeting table and plug it into a PC via USB. There is no way to mess it up even for a first time user. Even more, it intelligently cuts up the image to highlight who is talking on the screen. It can cut out and highlight up to three people at the same time during a conversation. No matter what, the speaker is always clearly seen on the far side.

I had a very interesting experience the other day. I had to make a trip to a job site to help a customer overcome some difficulties commissioning a Grass Valley GV Director. It turned out that most of the troubles were compounded by the end-user not understanding the requirements (and therefore limitations) of Pro Video system design.
This camera is able to be controlled via most standard controllers and networks. Where it shines is on the price and performance ratio. No matter what conditions you throw at it, it does one thing and that keeps performing. If you are looking for an image upgrade, it is not just about going HD, it is about color correctness, light performance, and the ability to adapt from a wide shot to a clear 30x zoom quickly and reliably. There are never any complaints or sacrifices with this model. HD-SDI, HDMI, and Network outputs mean that you can easily get the signal where you need it to go, without worry or hassle. Perfect for the last minute upgrade!
I have a neighbor with four children and to make it work, she runs a tight ship with a lot of rules and regulations. I am pretty sure it all comes down from her traditional good Catholic background and goes back generations to the old country. One thing she always tells her children, “There is always a sequential order in your life… finish school, find a job, get married, have babies… in that order and in that order only!
The classic boardroom has taken a bit of a backseat in recent years to the newly popular huddle spaces. It is now prime time to circle back with some clients and talk to them about giving their boardroom (and other large meeting spaces) a major tech overhaul. We are in the midst of a bona fide “boardroom renaissance”! All the trendy and fun tech that people have come to know and love in their huddle spaces now needs to be available in their boardroom, but with greater security, crisper images, as well as a heightened look and feel of prestige. Every piece of equipment must help deliver a hassle-free collaborative experience. It must also maintain the aesthetics and impact that the executive boardroom is intended to showcase. Our goal here is to create a a functional area for executives to get to business and make a statement. The technology must be intuitive, always work, and create a visual atmosphere and backdrop that supports getting down to business.
Imagine what the leading wireless sharing company could do to take their world-famous product and make it even more relevant, 5 years on since its inception. While observing users in action, drawing up sketches in conference rooms, surveying what new requirements people are seeking and probing around in the engineering lab, Barco has done something to leapfrog themselves.
If you do any kind of House of Worship production you have probably run into an issue with stage noise at some point in time especially if you are using a choir mic set up that has a wider pickup pattern. The over bleed can be anything from the minister talking to someone at the side of the stage to a baby in the first row. There is a solution though. You can use a continuously-variable pattern condenser microphone system to control the pickup pattern and dial the choir in.
We have all been there, and visit that feeling regularly. “I have two hours, do I complete the church audio quote, the new restaurant/bar job, or the corporate paging? Which is the biggest? Which has the highest close?

Some of us will remember when we carried a Nokia phone and when companies like Nortel owned the business phone market with sales in the billions. Today, Nortel is bankrupt, and Nokia sold off their money-losing phone division to Microsoft. While the dedicated AV switcher market generates over $2B in revenue today, the latest generation of IP technology can distribute video, audio, and control signals over long distances at much lower costs, signaling a clear threat to dedicated AV switcher solutions.
